About Salkitschka

“Of the gladdest moments in human life is the departure on a distant journey into unknown lands. Shaking off with one mighty effort the fetters of Habit, the leaden weight of Routine, the Cloak of many Cares and the slavery of Home, man feels once more happy.”-Sir Richard Burton, an English explorer.

…but my friends call me Salkitschka. This nickname, which is actually derived from my surname, has stuck with me since high school. It is an inseparable part of my identity. That is why I chose it as my pseudonym. I was born and bred in Bosnia & Herzegovina. Most of the time, when I say that, I can see question mark popping up above people’s heads. Where is B&H? Well, for those who might not know, it is a country in the Balkan peninsula in South-east Europe, which used to be part of Yugoslavia. If you wonder, Yugoslavia doesn’t exist any longer. This is just one of many questions I’ve been asked. Answering these questions will probably be a topic for one of the future articles.

I have been thinking about writing a travel blog for quite some time. But, I didn’t have enough courage to actually give it a go. Then, I found out that Travelicious gives an opportunity to ordinary people to publish articles on their website. After my first article eventually got published on Travelicious, I got inspired to finally start writing my own travelogue,  so, one day when I get old and forgetful, I can remind myself of my travels.

For me, travelling is not just about staring at the buildings and monuments. It is about learning the story behind them. Thus besides sharing my travel experiences with you, I will also try to give interesting and historical facts about the places that I have visited as well as about my home country. I hope that My Travel Sketches won’t just be a resource for valuable tips for your future trips, but that it will teach you something as well. Enjoy reading!
